Third Annual Red Dot Community Art Exhibit

RED DOT is a one-night-only community exhibit that features small affordable works of art donated to support The Carrack. All work will be sold on Saturday, December 12, 2015 from 6 – 9 pm during a free art reception open to the public. Pieces will be priced at $25, $50, and $75, according to size.

How It Works

For Visitors

Each work of art will be labeled with a “1 dot,” “2 dot,” or “3 dot” label. Dots may be purchased from any Carrack volunteer in the space (look for smiling faces and red outfits!). Dots are $25 each. Purchased dots are placed directly on the label of the corresponding work of art. Once dots are placed, the buyer may take the work of art off the wall and take it home! Limited packaging materials and assistance will be available. All purchases are final and first-come, first-served. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. on December 12th. Cash preferred.

Any artist working in any medium is invited to donate work to The Carrack’s RED DOT Community Art Exhibit. Work will be priced by size and displayed anonymously. Admission to the event is free and all are invited and encouraged to attend.

Requirements

  • Small, unframed works of art on paper are encouraged.
  • 2D work must be no larger than 187 square inches, including frame, if framed. For reference, an 11”x17” piece equals 187 square inches (11 x 17 = 187), the largest dimensions we will accept.
  • 3D work must be no larger than approximately the size of a basketball.
  • Artists may submit up to 5 pieces.
  • Work cannot display the artist’s name on the front of the piece. Artists may include any text or contact info they’d like on the back of the piece for the buyer.
  • In the event that the artwork does not sell, the artist must include the artist’s name and email address on the back if the artist wants to have the work returned.*

* You may send Laura Ritchie (laura@thecarrack.org) an image of the work in an email if you would like to remain anonymous to the buyer but would like your piece returned in the event it does not sell.

How size-based pricing structure will work

Size is determined by multiplying width x height.

  • 60 square inches or smaller = $25
  • 61-120 square inches = $50
  • 120-187 square inches = $75

When to submit

The deadline to be included in RED DOT is Tuesday, December 8, 2015. Work can be dropped off during open hours (Tuesday – Friday 12 – 6 pm or Saturday 2 – 5 pm) until Saturday, December 5. Additional drop off times are Monday, December 7 and Tuesday, December 8 between 12 – 6 pm. Work may also be mailed to The Carrack at 111 West Parrish Street, Durham NC 27701.

carrack_red_dot_2014_web-109What happens to artwork if it doesn’t sell?

We hope it is a sell-out show! But, if artwork doesn’t sell, Laura Ritchie will send an email to the artist to notify them. Artists are then invited to pick-up artwork during two pick-up times from Laura the week following the event: December 13, 3-5 p.m. and December 14, 5-7 p.m, or by making an appointment. Artwork must be labeled with an email address for this to happen. Art that has not been retrieved by December 20, 2015 will be donated to Art Next Door, a local organization that provides art to families receiving a Habitat Home.

What does this event support?

The Carrack is a free, zero-commission art space that allows artists to show their work however they want and keep 100% of what they make. The Muse Masquerade (our annual fundraiser) raised our operating expenses for 2016 (THANK YOU!) so funds generated by RED DOT sales will be allotted specifically for paying artists next year who offer their amazing video, design, installation and marketing services (and more) to support The Carrack.
