The Light

The Light

A series of portraits by Saba Barnard

January 14 – 25, 2014

“The Light” is a series of interpretive portraits of women whom I know. Some I connected to just recently, others I have loved and respected my entire life. The paintings reflect the layered heritage of my subjects, one that is both eastern and western. In each piece, I attempt to illustrate a bit of my subject’s character and her noor, her inner light. This has been done throughout history and cultures by including a halo encircling a person’s head – a simple golden ring, an adorned disk, or a mass of flames. In each one of my portraits, the woman has her own unique halo.

“The paintings contain references to the Quran, classical portraiture, tarot cards, and iconography across cultures. Each woman is powerful and beautiful, in an almost mythical kind of way.”
