February 19 – March 1, 2014
The Carrack Modern Art and Melloweb present “Monsieur Contraste and the Church of Photography”, a film and photography experience, featuring the photographs of Jean Christian Rostagni and the feature documentary “Monsieur Contraste” by award-winning filmmaker Rodrigo Dorfman.
The Monsieur Contraste and the Church of Photography exhibit will run February 19th through March 1st. Monsieur Contraste (60:00) will have nine screenings, each accompanied by an artist talk with Jean-Christian Rostagni and a reception with select food and French wine sponsored by Whole Foods, Wine Authorities and Loaf. Feb 19th – 23rd and Feb 26th – March 1st. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased online: http://monsieurcontraste.com/screenings/carrack/
Monsieur Contraste, an intimate portrait of an artist who struggles with the demons of marketing, unfolds as Jean Christian Rostagni’s wife gives him one year to make some good money or face the prospect of bagging groceries at Whole Foods. Jean Christian, aka. Monsieur Contraste, sets up a home-grown art gallery in his house that he calls the “Church of Photography” and the rest is a really fun and provocative documentary about art, commercialism and the price an artist has to pay to remain true to his vision.
The Monsieur Contraste and the Church of Photography exhibit will give you the rare opportunity to experience a documentary in the same space as the photography exhibit of the works featured in the film. From the screen to the stage, in the blink of an eye, Monsieur Contraste will come alive before your eyes and take you on a tour of his Church of Photography. Part film screening, part art opening, Monsieur Contraste and his Church of Photography is a multi-dimensional art experience you will not soon forget.
In an amazing turn of event, Monsieur Contraste and The Church of Photography is supported by Whole Foods, and here is what they say about it: “We believe that the world will be better served if Jean-Christian Rostagni keeps doing what he does best, so we are supporting his show and suggest that people go see the film and buy his art. We believe that the arts are central to Durham culture, and are happy to help support them on this occasion.”
And wine lovers, please note that Wine Authorities is also supporting this event with a wine from la Drôme, Jean-Christian’s very region in France in the Rhône Valley. This superb wine is–are you ready?–a Wine Authority world wide exclusivity!
Opening Reception: February 19, 6:30 pm
Additional Receptions: February 20, 21, 22, 23, 26, 27, 28 and March 1
