It’s Our Voice: Photographs of Girls Rock NC

by Kelley Bennett

It’s Our Voice is a collection of black-and-white photographs showcasing the work of Girls Rock North Carolina, a non-profit organization based in Durham. Combined with an intersectional feminist ethos, Girls Rock NC utilizes the various processes of songwriting and music making to empower and engage girls and gender non-conforming youth throughout the Triangle area. Since January 2016, photographer Kelley Bennett has been interested not only in documenting Girls Rock campers as they learn instruments, attend workshops, form bands, and craft original songs, but also exploring a space that allows traditionally marginalized youth to be confident, be creative, and – above all – be loud.
