Callie Ryan is a Los Angeles based electronic musician and vocalist who creates textured compositions with a vulnerable and intentional foundation whilst aiming to invoke feelings of tenderness and self-reflection. Her projects document the search for a balance between the masculine and feminine, as well as presenting fluid feelings of ever-changing physical, emotional, and sexual anxieties and gratitudes alike. Exploring our abject and unaddressed internal anatomical systems and their connection to our feelings and actions is a core foundational brick for Callie’s compositions. She works to express tangible gut responses through emotive and detail-oriented sonic production.
Callie is a resident DUBLAB DJ, and has performed alongside artists such as Visible Cloaks, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Sage Caswell, Kelman Duran, Aisha Devi, Kelly Lee Owens, Loscil, Leech, Violence, Daedelus, Jimmy Tamborello (DNTEL), and more. She just completed her first score for the feature film, LADYWORLD, directed by Amanda Kramer, and released her debut record, HEALTH, via Los Angeles based label, OUTSIDE INSIGHT, this past March.
HEALTH is a tender meditation on loss and the resulting desire for comfort – be it familial, physical, emotional or romantic. It is an exploration of home, nostalgia, gratitude, fear and the manifestation of anxieties. It documents Callie’s journey of discovering her feminine sexuality, as well as the grounding effects of partnership, and the intimate exchanges between loved ones. This project also includes an exclusive remix by Los Angeles Artist, Sage Caswell.
Her single “Paste” liquefies the sexual tenderness, insecurities, and triumphs that infuse a woman’s life. The video for “Paste” was directed by Amanda Kramer and released via Vogue. Her record premiered on i-D Magazine.
knives of spain is 21st-century trobairitz music from North Carolina based auteur Gwen Young, whose sonic terrain spans delicate song craft to opaque experimentation. Her compositions are informed by diverse musical interests including collaborations in classical, North Indian classical, traditional Middle Eastern, psychedelic rock, Latin jazz and free improvisation. Since its inception in 2010, knives of spain has been a solo venture; Gwen performs all parts (classical guitar, accordion, Crumar analog synths, flute, broken autoharp, percussion, violin, Max/MSP, field recordings and voice) and presents multi-instrumental live sets in the tradition of electroacoustic performance. In 2013, she was awarded a grant from the NC Arts Council to support her vision of an unconventional solo singer-songwriter and to help with the creation of her second album Telluric, released on Chicago label Hairy Spider Legs in October of 2016. As with her first album (2012’s Opening Sequence), Gwen singularly recorded and produced it in her living room in NC. Telluric has been shared on Tiny Mix Tapes, several podcasts and radio shows, and it reached #3 on Duke University’s WXDU FM in Durham, NC.
We recommend parking in the parking deck on E. Chapel Hill St. which is one block up the hill from the venue.
