Artist Call: Satellite Dishes!

Artist Call: Satellite Dishes!

Calling Local Artists! Submit your design for the awesome, new [Satellite Park] to debut at the 2nd annual Mural Durham community event on Saturday, April 14th from 1-4pm with food trucks, live music, arts workshops & more.

Tell Me More: We’re painting real SATELLITE DISHES and turning the area into a PARK. See pics attached. Dishes = Canvases.

Submission Deadline: Submit your artist sketch to paint a satellite dish by next Tuesday, March 6th at 11:59pm.

Location: Satellite Park @Arts Annex (maker space at Duke), 404 Gattis St., Durham (in Burch Ave neighborhood)

Dish History: In 1991, Duke Tel Com installed eight satellite dishes and one 160-foot television tower. The Satellite Park received and delivered broadcast educational programming for Duke Cable Television, a cable TV service of Duke. With the emergence of the internet, this service was discontinued in the late 1990s.

How Process Works: Eight artists (8 dishes) will be selected based on submitted sketch and each given a stipend of $750.00 to buy supplies to paint a satellite dish in park.

We are going with a nature theme, as the Satellite Park will have benches and be a relaxing spot for hangs/events for the community.

Artists will start painting their dish a few weeks before event and live during event on Saturday, April 14th from 1-4pm.

We will power wash dishes in advance. We will also provide a way to get up to reach top of dishes. Artists may work on dishes in teams.
